Coronavirus vaccinations in Southwest Finland
In the wellbeing services county of Southwest Finland, we follow the guidelines of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (hereinafter also ‘THL’) concerning vaccinations. On this page, you can find up-to-date information about coronavirus vaccinations and booking of vaccination appointments in Southwest Finland.

Information on coronavirus vaccinations
Coronavirus vaccines are generally well suited for almost everyone. The protective efficacy of all coronavirus vaccines against a serious coronavirus disease is good.
We recommend a booster this autumn for:
- elderly people in nursing homes or regular home care
- all persons aged 75 and over
- all persons with severe immunodeficiency
Coronavirus vaccines for severely immunocompromised persons (thl.fi, in Finnish)
Booster vaccine is also offered for:
- all persons aged 65 and over
- those in medical risk groups aged 18 and over
At-risk groups for severe coronavirus disease (thl.fi, in Finnish)
A booster dose is recommended for all the severely immunodeficient from 6 months of age onward, regardless of how many booster doses they have received previously or how many times they have had the coronavirus disease.
It is recommended that at least six (6) months elapse between the last coronavirus vaccination and the booster dose.
If you have had the coronavirus disease in autumn 2024, you do not need a booster dose this season for protection purposes. The decision to administer the vaccine can be made for a specific reason. We recommend that you get vaccinated against COVID-19 until at least six (6) months after having had COVID-19.
We recommend the basic series of vaccinations regardless of how many times the person being vaccinated has had the coronavirus disease. For those who have had the disease, the vaccine is recommended at the earliest 6 months after the disease.
The basic series provides healthy under 65-year-olds with good protection against severe coronavirus disease, and booster doses are not needed.
Single vaccine dose basic series
A single vaccine dose basic series is recommended for persons who have not previously received coronavirus vaccinations. The majority of the population has already received the basic series of coronavirus vaccinations.
Single vaccine dose basic series is recommended for
- all 18-year-olds and above
- 12–17-year-olds belonging to risk groups.

2–3 vaccine dose basic series
For those with severe immunodeficiency, a two vaccine dose basic series is recommended from 6 months of age onward.
For recipients of stem cell transplant, 2–3 vaccine doses may be administered as a basic series at individual discretion.

Persons who have had a disease, pharmaceutical treatment or operation that has significantly weakened their immune system are considered severely immunodeficient.

A booster dose is recommended for all the severely immunodeficient from 6 months of age onward in early autumn 2024, regardless of how many booster doses they have received previously or how many times they have had the coronavirus disease. Following the autumn/winter booster dose, those with severe immunodeficiency may receive additional booster doses based on the individual assessment of the treating physician.
In the Varha region, vaccinations for immunodeficient 12-year-olds and above will begin in early September 2024.
The timetable for starting coronavirus vaccinations for severely immunodeficient children between 6 months and 11 years of age remains open. We will inform you about bookings as soon as the vaccines for children arrive.
Those with severe immunodeficiency have individual variation in vaccine response. According to a study by THL, especially severe chronic kidney disease and immunosuppressive medication weakened the antibody response. In such a situation, when suspecting a coronavirus contraction, it is particularly important to contact the health care services at low threshold so that the contraction can be confirmed and possible antiviral medication started in time.
A booster dose during autumn 2024 is recommended for severely immunodeficient 12-year-olds and older adolescents. As a rule, 12-17-year-olds are vaccinated at the same place as adults.
Children aged 6 months to 11 years may be eligible for a booster if the child is severely immunodeficient or has been assessed as being at high individual risk by the treating paediatrician. The timetable for coronavirus vaccinations for children between 6 months and 11 years of age will be finalised soon.
Influenza vaccine and booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine can be administered at the same time. This depends on the time of vaccination, as the wellbeing services counties will receive the influenza vaccines later than the coronavirus vaccines.
Influenza risk groups:
- personnel of social and health care as well as pharmaceutical services (participants in the immediate care or treatment of clients)
- pregnant women
- all 65-year-olds and above
- children aged from 6 months to 6 years
- those belonging to risk groups due to illness or treatment
- men starting their national service and women starting voluntary military service
- the immediate circle of people particularly susceptible to severe influenza
The most common side effects of coronavirus vaccines include local symptoms of the injection site, such as pain, redness, warmth and swelling. Transient general symptoms such as fever reactions, muscle aches, headaches, fatigue, irritability and chills are also very common. Lymph nodes may also swell locally.
Local and general symptoms usually start within a couple of days after the vaccination. They disappear in a few hours or days. They can be treated with fever and pain medication available at pharmacies. Local and general symptoms do not prevent further vaccinations.

However, some municipalities may have a different policy, so confirm the location when booking an appointment or by calling the health centre in your municipality of residence.
